In Ashkelon!
Woke up this morning after a good 8 hour sleep, thanks melatonin. The sun is shining outside my window and everything looks so dusty and beautiful! Jeffrey and Lucy come on Wednesday so I have a couple days to settle in, explore, and get to know everyone that is here on the dig. So, I'm treasuring these two days of vacation for it will be busy when they arrive!
Had quite the adventure starting in Newark. Israeli security is already infamously tight, then add to that El Al airlines and the craziness that has just past in Gaza (12 miles south of Ashkelon). I was questioned and considered suspect and so all my bags were tagged yellow. I was escorted through security to another holding room where I was interrogated and all my bags searched, then escorted on the plane... welcome to Israel! =)
When I arrive in Tel Aviv, I knew I had to take the train and taxi to Ashkelon. So along with all Israelis and no Americans, I boarded the train from Ben Gurion airport to Tel Aviv. Changed trains with the help of many English speaking Israelis only to find out my new train had broken after one stop and apparently I needed to get off and take a bus or other train to Ashkelon. I, of course had no idea what was going on and ended up being helped by about 5 Israeli men. A couple of whom asked if I was single and interested in an Israeli man. Got off that train fast!
Arrive to a wonderful meal at the Dan Gardens hotel and went to bed... Internet is spotty here and I haven't been taking my camera everywhere so hopefully my blog posts/pictures will get more timely.
