Memorial Day. A three day weekend. The beginning of summer. A juicy burger grilled to perfection. Time with family and friends. Is this all this weekend is about? The significance of this day is so lost amidst parties and summer thoughts... Why did it take my brother being in Afghanistan to remind me to commemorate those who have lost their lives in service to our country?

But now I see. and remember. This week two soldiers in Daniel's battalion lost their lives in combat. The danger is so real, and the sacrifice so significant. These men were doing their job, and died for their country--for you and me. What an honor to pray for those who are defending our freedom and serving their country.

And this is scary, for us as we reflect on Daniel being there, in each fire fight and mission. I have claimed Deuteronomy 31:8 for him and all others who are serving, "The Lord himself goes before Daniel and is with Daniel. He will never leave him nor forsake him. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged."

May we reflect. May we remember.
